Free Lo-Fi Beat Maker — Dusty, Vintage Beats in Your Browser
Shuffle Drummer is a free lo-fi beat maker that runs in your browser. Chop a dusty sample, swing the drums, run the whole thing through 12-bit, cassette and vinyl simulation and tape emulation: that warm, wobbly lo-fi hip hop sound, with no download and no signup to start.
The FX tab: reverb and delay on the left, 16 master FX pads on the right. CASSETTE SIM, VINYL SIM, LO-FI and CRUSHER are the lo-fi toolbox.
The recipe for a lo-fi beat
Set the tempo — 70 to 90 BPM is lo-fi territory; drag the BPM display, or double-click it and type the value.
Chop a sample — drop a soul loop, a jazz chord or a vinyl rip into the SAMPLER tab, slice it, pitch it down a semitone or two, and play two or three chops on the pads until the loop breathes.
Loosen the drums — open the DRUMS BANK and load the lo-fi kit. Program a lazy kick, a snare on 2 and 4, hi-hats with ghost notes, then set SWING between 58% and 64% and nudge the snare a hair late with TIMING.
Dust it up — switch on 12 BITS, turn the VINTAGE and CRUSH knobs up a little, then in the FX tab hit CASSETTE SIM or VINYL SIM and add a short plate reverb on the sample.
Glue and bounce — in the MASTER tab engage the bus compressor and tape emulation, then export WAV stems or a master, or share the beat with a link.
The full walkthrough, with the exact settings and a pattern to copy, is in the guide how to make a lo-fi beat.
Starting point that works every time
BPM 82 · SWING 60% · grid 1/16 · 2 bars
Kick on 1 and the “and” of 2, snare on 2 and 4, hats on every 8th with ghost notes in between
Sample pitched −2 semitones, 12 BITS on, VINTAGE at a quarter turn, VINYL SIM pad on
Everything the lo-fi sound needs
A dedicated lo-fi drum kit — soft kicks, papery snares and dusty hats in the DRUMS BANK, next to boom bap kits and fully synthesized drums
Sample chopping — flip loops and vinyl into pitched chops on pads, remove the original drums from a loop to play your own (online sampler)
Swing and loose timing — SWING from 50% to 75%, ghost notes by clicking low in a step, 96 PPQ timing to drag hats and push kicks
Degradation on the drums — 12 BITS mode, VINTAGE and CRUSH knobs, hi-pass and low-pass per channel
16 master FX pads — cassette sim, vinyl sim (RIAA curve, wow and flutter, crackle and hiss), lo-fi, crusher, tape echo, grain, isolator, chorus, flanger, phaser, reverb, delay… up to four at once, and recordable live with REC LIVE
Tape emulation and bus compression — Ampex-style tape, SSL-style compressor, transient shaping and a limiter on the master
Melody — a sampled piano or the Minimoog-style synth for Rhodes-style chords and sub bass, in the piano roll
WAV export — stems and master, straight into your DAW; or share the beat with a link
Built by a producer, for producers
Shuffle Drummer is made by Mani Deïz, a French hip-hop producer making beats since 1998, with three friends. Lo-fi and boom bap are in its DNA, but it is a full beat maker with a sampler and a drum machine under the hood, free and in your browser. For the drum side of the sound, see the boom bap drum patterns guide.
